ADU Definition:
The Zoning Code defines an Accessory Dwelling Unit as a smaller, secondary dwelling unit on the same lot or within a house, attached house or manufactured home. The unit includes its own independent living facilities with provisions for sleeping, cooking, and sanitation, designed for residential occupancy independent of the primary dwelling unit. The unit may have a separate exterior entrance or an entrance to an internal common area accessible to the outside.

AccessoryDwellings.org was founded, and is edited, by 3 volunteers in Portland, Oregon. You can email them at [email protected]. AccessoryDwellings.org is a robust site with all the ADU info you could want, and more.
Kol Peterson, the local ADU guru who is a volunteer at AccessoryDwellings.org, is an ADU advocate with a background in environmental planning. Kol lives in an ADU that he completed in 2011 and teaches regular ADU classes for homeowners. He also owns Caravan—The Tiny House Hotel with his wife. Read more about Kol on his very thoroughly documented personal ADU design/build blog and at BuildingAnADU.com, which documents his latest ADU development project and provides resources for others who aspire to build their own ADU. In January, 2018, Kol released the book, Backdoor Revolution-The Definitive Guide to ADU Development. Kol can be reached at [email protected].
